February news for our CSA members

Posted 2/5/2017 2:58pm by Wild Type Ranch.

Greetings to our loyal Wild Type Ranch customers,

Firstly, let us thank you all so much for your support. It has always been appreciated. For the past few years, it has been our pleasure to supply you with natural grass-fed beef from our organically fertilized, chemical-free pastures.

Between the progressive damage to Ralph’s spine from a ranch-related injury in 2012, and the increasing off-ranch demands of Sara’s executive mentoring and consulting business, we can no longer keep up with the demands of a full-on retail beef business. It is with a heavy heart we write to tell you we are significantly downsizing our operation, and will be slowly phasing out much of our beef sales over the next 6-8 months. We will be keeping a small herd of cattle and a small portion of our ranch, with the bulk of it being leased out.

You will notice that some items on our website are no longer available. Starting this month, we will slow our rate of harvest down to every second month, however, we will continue to make monthly deliveries, as long as orders and supply merit.

Around mid-year we will have harvested the last of the prior year’s calf-crop. Until then, the priority for our beef will be supplying our CSA customers and our retail outlets.  For the time being, the website has halves and quarters disabled so we can keep our CSA Cow-Share customers supplied. This does not mean necessarily that we can't supply a quarter or a half, so if you want a half or quarter before July, please contact us via email.

Special notice for CSA members: Sometime between June and August (we’ll keep you posted on the exact timing), the Cow-Share program will be discontinued. If you have completed your agreement with us (the purchase of eight CSA packs within 12-18 months of enrollment), your last CSA order will be paid for from the subscription fee that you paid us when you joined the Cow-Share program. Those who enrolled within the last 18 months and have not had time to complete their commitment by June will receive a pro-rata credit on their last pack, based on the number of packs that you have purchased. Those subscribers who don't participate in the Cow-Share program by the end of June will be deemed to have abandoned the program and will forfeit the subscription. For information about your CSA membership, please refer to the terms and conditions here.

What happens after mid-year? After we shut down the CSA program, we will be selling halves and quarters, several times per year. Those who want a half or a quarter, please email directly to beef@wildtyperanch.com for availability. We will maintain an email list of active customers, so you will continue to be notified as we have beef available.

With the downsizing of our operation, we can no longer justify the annual expense of our online store. We plan to keep it active until the CSA program closes. After that, we will simplify our website and the main difference in the ordering process will be that you will email us your order instead of doing it through the online store.

We know that many of you only eat Wild Type Ranch beef, and we truly appreciate your loyalty. Downsizing has been a difficult decision to make. We have made efforts to sell the business as a going concern to other local natural beef producers, but so far, we have not had any success.

Thanks for supporting us, and preferring sustainable, naturally produced, healthy, local food!

The Wild Type Ranch Team (Ralph, Sara, and Cathy)
